The Delores Project—
SHELTER AND SERVICES FOR WOMEN EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS
The mission of the The Delores Project is to provide safe, comfortable overnight shelter and services to unaccompanied adult women who are homeless and have limited resources. The model of service is one of hospitality, respect, and regard for the dignity of each guest.
Every night The Delores Project ensures that at least 50 women are safely off the streets — women who might otherwise face the risk of physical danger and illness that comes with living on the streets. By providing transitional support services in addition to emergency shelter, The Delores Project assists women in developing the skills and resources necessary to stay off the streets and move towards stability.
The Delores Projects is a unique environment designed to encourage a homelike feeling of safety and calm. On each woman’s bed is a handmade quilt made by volunteers. These quilts not only provide women warmth, but also the comfort of knowing that others care about her even when she feels most alone.
In 2009, 515 individual women found shelter and support at The Delores Project. Last year 20% of the women in our Transitional Shelter program moved out of The Delores Project into stable long-term housing. |
