History

In the late fall of 1999, Brothers Redevelopment, Inc (BRI) offered the use of their building to the homeless service provider community.  A collaboration of nonprofits and agencies quickly organized to open the space as a shelter for single adult women.  The result of this effort was The Delores Project, which opened its doors to homeless women on January 10, 2000.

Since opening in the year 2000, The Delores Project has served over 1,900 homeless women, provided approximately 47,000 nights of shelter and over 92,000 meals.

In 2001, The Delores Project became a separate entity under the auspices of the Colorado Nonprofit Development Center, from which we derived our charitable organization tax status for three years. In June of 2004, The Delores Project became a freestanding tax-exempt charitable organization after being affiliated with the Colorado Nonprofit Development Center for three-plus years.

On April 17, 2006, The Delores Project completed a capital campaign and broke ground on a new permanent shelter which opened the doors on December 20, 2006. The new shelter enables The Delores Project to shelter up to 50 women per night with emergency space for an additional 25 in times of severe weather. In 2007, The Delores Project plans to house over 400 homeless women for 365 consecutive nights. In addition, the increase in space and the year-round availability have allowed The Delores Project to increase the onsite services available to homeless women.

The organization is governed by a ten-member Board of Directors whose combined professional expertise, ability to contribute financially and raise funds, and dedication as trustees of our organization’s stakeholders, position it to take The Delores Project into the future.
